Tour’s Program

In this 4 days Lhasa highlight tour, we will be focusing on all the popular historical and sacred religious sites of Lhasa including the world famous Potala palace, Jokhang temple, the great monasteries of Sera and Drepung. Because of its high altitude at 11,975 feet, the city had limited accessibility from the outside world for centuries. With its 1,000 years of cultural and spiritual history, it leaves an impressive heritage that has helped to create the mysterious Tibetan religion. Your first view of the grandeur Potala Palace soaring above the holy city will leave you stunned. While you are gently recovering from the jet lag and getting use to the high altitude of Tibet, the wonders and beauty of the city will never cease to overwhelm you. Potala palace and Jokhang temple are main focal points of Tibetan pilgrims. Pilgrims from far and wide have taken arduous journeys across mountains and rivers to visit the them since centuries back. The street around the Jokhang temple, colloquially known as the Barkhor, is famous for its traditional market, which also serves as a meeting point for pilgrims from different places. It is a real pleasure to walk, rubbing shoulders with other pilgrims and tourists on this bustling street. The street is also regarded highly in spirituality, as a walk circumambulating the Barkhor on this street is considered as one of the most devotional circuits. Then we get to visit great monasteries of Sera and Drepung, which are two of the most advanced traditional learning centers in ancient Tibet. Numerous scholars and practitioners of the Tibetan Buddhist faith have passed through these monasteries.

Day 01. Arrive Lhasa either by Air or Train

Coming to Tibet in flight will give you the beautiful panoramic view of the snowy Himalayan ranges. If you coming by train to Lhasa, you will get to see beautiful sceneries of high plateau by crossing the mighty Thangula ranges. Upon arriving at Lhasa, you will be met by our representatives and transferred to your hotel for check-in. It is about 60 km from the airport to Lhasa which will take about an hour to reach and from train station it is about 25 km to Lhasa. Free at leisure for the rest of the day to get used to the high altitude and to alleviate jet lag. Overnight in Lhasa.

Day 02 Visit Jokhang temple, bustling Bakhor street and Sera monastery.

In morning we will visit Jokhang temple which is in the center of the Old Lhasa city. Pilgrims from far and wide have taken arduous journeys across mountains and rivers to visit the temple since centuries back. The day will end with a visit to the Sera Monastery. It was built in the fifteenth century and now it is home to several hundred monks from different parts of Tibet. Buddhist philosophical debates among the monks will be happening in the monastery every day except Sunday. Continue to acclimatize and alleviate jet lag as today was your first day. Overnight in Lhasa.

Day 03 Visit Potala palace and Drepung monastery

Day will begin with the visit to the famous Potala palace, one of seven wonders of world according to USA today in 2006. It was first built by 33rd King Songtsen Gangpo in 7th century and later in 17th century rebuilt by 5th Dalai Lama, since then it was home to the Dalai Lama and his government. And in the afternoon, we will visit the Drepung monastery, once the world's largest monastery that housed for more than 10,000 monks. The Ganden Podang in Drepung was the residence of the Dalai Lamas until the Great Fifth Dalai Lama constructed the Potala. Drepung was known for the high standards of its academic study, and was called the Nalanda of Tibet, a reference to the great Buddhist monastic university of India.
